Test Design for Moisture Resistance of Packaging Materials of Donkey Hide Gelatin Fudge

Abstract: the shelf life of donkey hide gelatin fudge is usually long, so the barrier performance of packaging materials has an important impact on its quality. In this paper, the front and back composite film materials of plastic packaging used in a certain brand of donkey hide gelatin fudge are used as test samples. The moisture resistance of the samples is evaluated by the water vapor transmission rate of the test samples. The test principle, parameters and test process of C360M Water Vapor Transmission Rate Test System are introduced, which provides a reference for the moisture resistance test design of the packaging materials of donkey hide gelatin fudge.

The shelf life of donkey hide gelatin fudge is usually from 10 months to 18 months. The sugar in raw materials can inhibit the growth and reproduction of microorganisms to a certain extent. However, if stored improperly, problems such as mildew, oxidation and deterioration may still occur. Therefore, the packaging materials of donkey hide gelatin fudge should have good barrier properties, which can effectively control the penetration of oxygen and water vapor inside and outside the package, and prevent the quality reduction and taste deterioration of donkey hide gelatin fudge in the shelf life. This paper introduces a test method to test the moisture resistance of packaging materials through the test of water vapor transmission rate.

Sample

In this test, the water vapor transmission rate of the plastic composite film (divided into front and back materials) used in a certain brand of donkey hide gelatin fudge was tested.

Standard

This test adopts cup method which conforms to ASTM E96 Standard Test Methods for Water Vapor Transmission of Materials.

Test instrument

In this paper, C360M Water Vapor Transmission Rate Test System is used as the test instrument, which is independently developed and produced by Jinan Labthink Instruments Co., Ltd.

Test process

This test uses desiccant method to test the sample.

(1) Cut 3 pieces of 74mm diameter specimens from the front and back of the sample.

(2) Add a certain amount of activated molecular sieve desiccant to each of the six test cups, place the sealing ring, specimen and gasket on the test cup in turn, and screw the cover of the test cup tightly. Place the test cup on the test cup holder of the instrument, and close the test chamber cover.

(3) In the control software of the instrument, set the sample name, test temperature, humidity, test mode and other parameter information corresponding to each test cup. Click the “test” button to start the test. The instrument runs the test according to the set parameters, and the test results of the sample and the results of each weighing are displayed after the test.

Test result

The mean of the test results of three specimens is taken as the water vapor transmission of the front and back of the sample. The water vapor transmission on the front was 5.2341 g/( m2·24h) and the back was 2.8473 g/( m2·24h).

Conclusion

In this paper, the water vapor transmission rate of the front and back packaging materials of the donkey hide gelatin fudge was measured by the desiccant method. It can be seen from the test results that the moisture resistance of the front and back materials are not the same, and the moisture resistance of the back materials is obviously better than that of the front materials. Therefore, in the calculation and analysis of the water vapor permeability of packaging and the shelf life of donkey hide gelatin fudge, we should comprehensively analyze the moisture resistance of the front and back composite plastic film. In this paper, the water vapor transmission of 6 specimens can be efficiently measured at the same time in one test. The control of the instrument on the test temperature, humidity, air velocity and other parameters is stable and reliable, which can greatly shorten the time of reaching the permeability balance, further improve the test efficiency and accuracy of test results.
